Web Development in Nairobi vs Nakuru: Does Agency Location Actually Matter?

A lot of Nairobi businesses assume they need a Nairobi-based developer, and a lot of Nakuru businesses assume their local options are limited to whoever's nearby. Neither assumption holds up once you look at how a modern web project actually gets delivered.

Ten years ago, "who's building my website" and "who can I meet in person this week" were the same question. That's largely stopped being true: briefs, design reviews, and revisions all happen over WhatsApp, video calls, and shared documents regardless of which city either party is sitting in. What actually matters is whether the process itself is responsive and accountable, not the physical distance between offices.

What genuinely doesn't change with distance

• Response time. A WhatsApp-first process responds in the same 2 hours whether the client is three streets away or three counties away.
• Design review speed. Screen-sharing a design mockup over a call works identically at any distance. Nobody needs to be in the same room to say "move that button" or "make the logo bigger."
• Payment and delivery. M-Pesa and card payments settle the same way nationally, and a committed delivery window is either honoured or it isn't. Location doesn't change that.

What genuinely does change

• Market pace and competition visibility. Nairobi's market moves faster and competitors are more often already online, a slow launch there is a more visible missed window than in a smaller market.
• In-person meeting availability. Being based in Nakuru means in-person kickoff meetings are genuinely available for Nakuru clients without either party losing half a day to travel, a real advantage, but a local one, not one that should be assumed to apply everywhere.
• Local market underservice. Cities and regions outside Nairobi are sometimes underserved by Nairobi-based agencies that treat them as a lower priority than their local client base, not a technical limitation, just a business-priority one.

What to actually ask instead of "where are you based"

Rather than filtering developers by city, the more useful questions are the ones that predict whether a remote-delivered project actually finishes on time: What's your committed delivery window, in writing? What's your response time for questions during the build? Can I see a live, working project right now? Those three questions matter regardless of whether the answer comes from Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, or Kampala.
